Drôle d’histoire que celle du jazz. Une musique née dans les cales de l’Atlantique noir, une rencontre du troisième type qui va donner le ton du vingtième siècle : place à la culture globale, aux identités hybrides, aux mélanges sublimes, sans jamais oublier l’origine de cette originalité. C’est de cette épopée dont parle entre les lignes ce récit-jazz composé par Alessandro Baricco, à travers le destin d’un bébé abandonné sur un paquebot et recueilli par l’équipage en 1900 : il deviendra le plus grand pianiste qui ait jamais joué sur l’Océan sans poser pied à terre ! Pour donner vie à cette partition, un piano en solo et des mots dits, blues ou plus joyeux. « Je sais maintenant que ce jour-là Novecento avait décidé qu’il allait s’asseoir devant les touches blanches et noires de sa vie, et commencer à jouer une musique, absurde et géniale, compliquée mais superbe, la plus grande de toutes. »
