« Ce qui suit a été retranscrit mot pour mot à partir d’entretiens et de correspondances. Rien n’a été ajouté et les mots utilisés sont ceux employés même si certaines coupes ont pu être faites. » avertit la première didascalie. « Rien de ceci n’est vrai » affirme pourtant la quatrième de couverture de l’édition anglaise de Occupe-toi du bébé. Que croire ? C’est précisément la question que creuse la pièce de Dennis Kelly. L’auteur britannique a fabriqué de toute imagination un théâtre documentaire, une « pièce verbatim » pour reprendre l’expression en vogue outre-manche, en s’inspirant de plusieurs cas d’infanticides qui secouèrent la Grande-Bretagne en 2007. Maniant les techniques journalistiques, il mène l’enquête et interroge les acteurs de cette histoire sous prétexte de trouver la vérité. Face à la caméra qui renvoie l’image en direct sur grand écran, se succèdent Donna, accusée de meurtres après la mort de ses enfants en bas-âge mais finalement relaxée faute de preuve ; Lynn, sa mère, habile politicienne, écartée du Parti travailliste par cette sale affaire, qui se lance seule dans la campagne électorale et entend faire triompher la juste cause ; le Docteur Millard, psychiatre, qui a identifié un syndrome « Leeman-Ketley » poussant des femmes à tuer par trop forte empathie… Seul Martin, mari de Donna, se refuse à répondre et dénonce l’obscénité de cette curiosité qui prend la souffrance d’autrui comme sujet, à l’instar de tant de tabloïds.
Jeu de la réalité
En confrontant le témoignage au théâtre, espace de la fiction, Dennis Kelly trouble la crédibilité de la parole et le pacte de croyance qui lie la scène et la salle. Il révèle l’ambiguïté de chaque protagoniste, qui use aussi de la confession et de la compassion comme posture médiatique et représentation de soi. Justice, science, politique, médias, famille, individu, théâtre… tous les discours se fendillent dans ce jeu de la vérité où finit par poindre la duplicité des intérêts. « Il y a la vérité et ce que les gens croient être la vérité, tout est question de point de vue. ». Dans le rôle de Dennis Kelly, le metteur en scène Olivier Werner dirige les interviews et dévoile avec subtilité les revers du comportement et de la sincérité des uns comme des autres par un dispositif scénique qui reprend les codes télévisuels tout en montrant le hors-champ. Telle démarche supposait des comédiens d’une parfaite justesse. Tous se glissent dans les mailles de leur rôle avec un naturel déroutant, prouvant le pouvoir du théâtre de faire advenir la complexité du réel par l’illusion.
