Il reste debout, quasiment immobile durant toute la durée de la représentation, face à nous, campé sur une sorte de promontoire, de ponton stylisé, comme suspendu aux abords de l’existence, à la lisière d’un espace abstrait qui sera traversé par toutes les forces, tous les remous, toutes les éruptions ayant contribué à bâtir l’histoire du monde. « Seul sur le quai désert, en ce matin d’été, / Je regarde du côté de la barre, je regarde l’Indéfini ». Fort comme un roc, il se révèle pourtant déjà tellement vulnérable, entièrement perméable aux mouvements de l’âme, à l’esprit minéral, végétal, animal que brassent les quelque mille vers d’Ode maritime. C’est un périple au cœur d’une conscience intime que convoque ce merveilleux poème, une échappée au-delà de toute limite, en-dehors des restrictions qu’imposent l’espace et le temps. « Partir vers le Lointain, partir vers le Dehors, vers la Distance Abstraite, / Indéfiniment, par les nuits mystérieuses et profondes, / Emporté, comme la poussière, par les vents, par les tempêtes ! / Partir, partir, partir, partir une fois pour toutes ! » Jean-Quentin Châtelain regarde droit devant lui. Sauvage et solitaire. Comme s’il était le dernier homme.
Des mots qui viennent de loin
Il respire et façonne de longs silences. Il va chercher des cris, des plaintes antédiluviennes. Il dit des mots qui viennent de loin, en soufflant, en découpant, en forant. Comme s’il était le dernier être vivant, un être qui s’avance vers le vide avec pour seul équipage la mémoire et l’imaginaire d’une humanité en partage. « Une mouette qui passe, / Et ma tendresse grandit. » La voix rejoignant des champs hardis, inexplorés, le regard perdu révélant le trouble d’une inspiration archaïque, le comédien semble là et ailleurs. Là, dans ce corps dont la densité en impose à l’espace du plateau. Ailleurs, dans une sorte d’extrême fragilité, de nudité absolue, au plus proche de l’essence des choses, des questions de la vie. « Ce que je veux c’est emporter vers la Mort / Une âme débordant de Mer. / Ivre morte des choses maritimes ». Il s’agit d’une expérience périlleuse à laquelle se livre Jean-Quentin Châtelain. Une expérience qui semble le transporter bien au-delà des seules fulgurances du théâtre et de la poésie. Il fallait un grand metteur en scène pour diriger un comédien jusqu’à de telles profondeurs d’être. En amenant Jean-Quentin Châtelain à « voir des ports mystérieux sur la solitude de la mer », à « flotter comme l’âme de la vie, partir comme une voix », Claude Régy se hisse, lui aussi, au plus haut de son art.
