Tout commence par une image à la Magritte : une femme dans une étendue désertique est enfoncée jusqu’au-dessus de la taille dans un mamelon de terre. Une sonnerie régulière tient Winnie éveillée, qui s’émerveille d’un rien, ou plutôt, du peu qui lui peut arriver dans ces conditions. Winnie sait « sombrer en chantant » pour reprendre les mots de Beckett, et l’on imagine parfaitement l’étincelle de folie si humaine dans le regard de Catherine Frot habiter de sa force le personnage et tout ce texte auquel Marc Paquien attribue des propriétés opératiques. Rire dyonisiaque à la main – ni résigné, ni amer – mais célébrant l’ivresse face à la finitude humaine, le metteur en scène compte échapper à tout psychologisme et à toute tentative de relecture du sens pour laisser les mots et l’écriture de Beckett résonner, dans l’attitude « d’une écoute musicale venant donner corps à l’invisible ». Un théâtre de l’absurde où la métaphore s’incorpore donc à la matière brute des mots, des images et de la musique de l’œuvre pour rendre hommage à celui dont Alain Badiou estime avec justesse que le comique recouvre « un amour puissant pour l’obstination humaine, pour l’increvable désir ».
