Comment pouvons-nous, sur le chemin de la sénescence, fragilisés par les effets du temps, vivre, ressentir et espérer le bonheur ? Cette question, la dramaturge de Robert Wilson, Ellen Hammer, la place au centre de la pièce de Samuel Beckett. Une pièce écrite en anglais en 1960 (année de sa création à New York), puis traduite en français par l’auteur lui-même, avant d’être immortalisée par Madeleine Renaud en 1963, sous la direction de Roger Blin, au Théâtre de l’Odéon. « Beckett nous immerge dans la vie d’une femme d’âge mûr, ensevelie jusqu’au torse dans un monticule, le bas du corps immobile, restant invisible pour les autres, explique Ellen Hammer. Elle ne communique qu’à travers ses bras, ses mains, son visage, ses yeux pleins de vie et sa parole. Elle tente de transformer chaque jour en un jour heureux. Elle essaie de happer des moments de bonheur et y parvient grâce à un rituel, qu’elle s’est elle-même créé. »
Clairs-obscurs métaphysiques
Ainsi va la vie pour Winnie, accompagnée de son mari Willie. Une vie tout en demi-teintes, en entre-deux impalpables et néanmoins grandement évocateurs : de sourires en regards baissés, de flots de mots en déchirures de silences, de rires outrepassés en échappées mélancoliques. Envisageant l’espace de Oh les beaux jours comme « une jungle d’asphalte dans laquelle Winnie est prisonnière », Robert Wilson a créé, pour cette pièce, une scénographie emblématique de l’univers esthétique qui a fait sa renommée internationale. Des lignes dures, tranchantes, anguleuses, bleues et noires, des clairs-obscurs métaphysiques, des contrejours, des contrechamps où se fondent les comédiens Adriana Asti et Giovanni Battista Storti. « Là où nous avons à la fois l’obscurité et la lumière, disait Samuel Beckett, nous avons aussi l’inexplicable ». Gageons que cet « inexplicable » prendra toute sa place, au sein de la représentation élaborée par le metteur en scène américain.
