Ecrits en 1962 par Saint-John Perse, les treize chants d’Oiseaux forment un hommage à la peinture de Georges Braque, mais aussi, de manière plus générale, un hommage à toute inspiration artistique. A travers la figure de l’oiseau, le poète (lauréat du Prix Nobel de littérature en 1960) élabore une ode métaphorique au sein de laquelle l’animal apparaît comme un « intercesseur entre le monde de l’homme et l’au-delà ». « Tout le poème, écrit à la gloire des oiseaux, dans un foisonnement d’images, fait appel à la nature, à la science des naturalistes, mais aussi aux mythes, explique Laurence Février. Il traduit, avec cette langue luxuriante d’une beauté très singulière, tout le rêve des hommes sur les oiseaux, une sorte de litanie de l’élan et de l’inspiration qui permet l’acte artistique. »Pour une représentation unique au Théâtre de L’Epée de Bois, la metteure en scène a composé un chœur parlé pour dix-huit acteurs, un chœur mis en mouvement qui cherche à représenter « le sacré, l’invisible, l’insaisissable, le rêve du vol d’Icare qui parcourt le texte sans jamais être dit ».
