Le Festival d’automne suit depuis 1994 l’œuvre d’Olga Neuwirth. À cette époque, la compositrice, âgée de vingt-six ans, était à l’Ircam où elle a travaillé avec Tristan Murail. Déjà, son univers musical, personnel et éclectique, s’affirmait fortement. Il s’est depuis développé en direction d’une toujours plus grande connexion entre les arts. En 2004, elle crée ainsi avec la vidéaste Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster …ce qui arrive…, d’après des textes de Paul Auster, présenté alors au Festival d’automne. Avec Remnants of Songs pour alto et orchestre, donné en création française le 19 octobre par Antoine Tamestit et l’Orchestre du Conservatoire, Olga Neuwirth poursuit une œuvre souvent parcourue de réminiscences embrouillées. Dirigé par Patrick Davin, ce concert propose également des œuvres d’Hindemith (Trauermusik pour alto et orchestre), Schoenberg (Musique d’accompagnement pour une scène de film) et Brahms (Symphonie n° 2), traçant ainsi comme une filiation. Un deuxième concert, le 24 octobre, entièrement consacré aux œuvres de la compositrice autrichienne, met l’accent sur la dimension spectaculaire – et souvent iconoclaste – de sa musique, avec Kloing ! pour « piano automatisé » et avec Hommage à Klaus Nomi pour contre-ténor et ensemble, deux œuvres faisant appel à un dispositif vidéo en direct.
