Pianiste et compositeur, ethnologue de formation, Olivier Hutman apparaît sur la scène jazz française au début des années 80 et obtient en 1984 le prix Boris Vian de l’Académie du jazz pour son premier album en leader (« Six Songs »). Ce nouveau projet discographique est né d’une commande du festival de jazz de La Rochelle sur le thème de la francophonie. « Le titre du projet s’est imposé dès le départ : les mangroves reliant naturellement les continents les uns aux autres, elles sont un symbole fort de ce qu’est la musique de jazz à mes yeux (mélange d’influences, brassage et choc de cultures). J’ai voulu privilégier dans ce nouveau travail le jeu collectif à travers l’interaction entre les instruments et le rôle imparti à chacun, l’énergie, qui a toujours constitué pour moi un facteur indispensable à mon expression, la danse/le swing, et également la liberté de chahuter sans limite aucune la composante harmonique d’un thème » explique Hutman. Avec Jacques Schwarz-Bart (saxophones), Salvatore La Rocca (contrebasse) et Hans Van Oosterhout (batterie).
