Si l’élégance de la musique de Massenet fait parfois oublier la condition de son héroïne, Manon, Olivier Py, qui signe la mise en scène de cette production créée à Genève en 2016, ne l’évacue pas, au contraire : appelant un chat un chat, il axe son travail sur la prostitution, « le sort de Manon [lui] faisant penser à celui de ces filles qui aujourd’hui arrivent de l’Est, à qui on fait miroiter qu’elles feraient des études et qui se retrouvent sur un trottoir derrière la gare d’Arras. » Dans cette transposition contemporaine, Patricia Petibon, qui a travaillé plusieurs fois avec Olivier Py (Lulu et Dialogue des Carmélites) incarne une Manon complexe. Elle a pour partenaire Laurent Alvaro, tandis que dans la fosse, Marc Minkowski dirige ses Musiciens du Louvre.
