Michael Jarrell (né en 1958) s’est illustré à trois reprises dans le genre du monodrame (récit, parlé ou chanté, avec musique), tissant des œuvres fortes sur les mots de puissants porteurs d’images : Christa Wolf (Cassandre, 1994), Heiner Müller (Le Père, 2010) et Olivier Py pour Siegfried, nocturne (2013). Dans la nouvelle dont il tire son livret, le metteur en scène et dramaturge imagine Siegfried, le héros wagnérien, parcourant les décombres de la civilisation européenne au lendemain de la guerre, à la recherche du Rhin pour son écoulement inaltérable plus que pour son or. Ce texte désenchanté trouve son prolongement dans l’écriture minutieuse du compositeur suisse, expressive, radicale dans ses contrastes. Le baryton Otto Katzameier porte la voix du héros (et ténor) déchu. Pascal Rophé dirige les solistes de l’ONPL.
