Comment cette personnalité publique vous concerne-t-elle intimement, en tant qu’homme, poète, citoyen ?
Olivier Py : Mitterrand est l’homme politique le plus important de ma génération. Je n’étais pas « mitterrandolâtre ». Dans Requiem pour Srebrenica en 1998, j’avais convoqué sa figure en scène. A l’époque, j’étais contre ses positions sur la guerre en Bosnie. J’avais alors constaté que la présence de ce « personnage » sur un plateau provoquait chez les spectateurs un état de réception d’une rare intensité, qui touche à l’inconscient collectif. Depuis, j’avais le projet d’une pièce sur lui. J’ai lu ses discours, ses écrits, des travaux d’historiens, des biographies, j’ai rencontré des gens. Peu à peu, je me suis composé « un » Mitterrand, où se glissent inévitablement des projections personnelles. La ligne entre la fiction et la vérité historique est toujours étroite.
Comment avez-vous travaillé à partir de ces matériaux ?
O. P. : Je n’écris pas un documentaire historique. Ce texte ne se veut pas exhaustif et ne suit pas la chronologie. Il reprend essentiellement des propos de Mitterrand, reconstitue certaines scènes. Il retrace avant tout la méditation intérieure d’un homme au pouvoir, assailli par la mort, qui essaie de mettre la réalité à la hauteur de ses convictions.
Vous déplacez ainsi la figure forgée par les commentateurs et vous dégagez la politique de la pratique politicienne.
O. P. : Mitterrand a, comme les autres, fait de la politique politicienne. Ces roueries ne m’intéressent pas ici. Je montre la politique comme questionnement philosophique, comme réflexion sur l’histoire, je travaille sur la valeur des combats, sur l’exercice du pouvoir en tant que capacité d’action sur le présent et sur l’avenir. Il m’importe que le théâtre se saisisse de ces sujets-là. L’actuel mépris pour la classe politique menace la démocratie. Il décrédibilise le métier de politique. Sans doute ce discrédit résulte-il du glissement de la politique vers la communication, qui a d’ailleurs commencé avec Mitterrand et Jacques Séguéla. L’autre mutation majeure est l’accélération de l’histoire, qui se faisait avec le temps voici deux décennies et se fait maintenant en quelques mois. Cette immédiateté déconcerte la classe politique. A la fin de son mandat, Mitterrand avait compris ce décalage de tempo. Les événements allaient « andante » quand lui restait « allegro ».
« Ce n’est pas un traité de sagesse dont nous avons besoin, mais d’une représentation. Représentation est le mot juste, rendre présent à nouveau ce qui toujours se dérobe à la conscience. » écrit Mitterrand*. Qu’advient-il par le processus de la représentation qui nous échappe autrement ?
O. P. : Le théâtre peut relier la personne intime aux faits. L’historien pourra expliquer mais pas faire sentir l’inquiétude, le doute, le complexe cheminement d’une décision… tout ce que trahissent un silence dans la phrase, une hésitation dans la voix, un tressaillement de la chair. L’imminence de la mort influe sur les choix que fait alors le Président. L’incarnation le montre, elle donne un corps aux idées et aux actes. Pour comprendre ce qu’est l’action, il faut agir. La politique est un combat qui engage tout l’être. Mitterrand a toujours ferraillé. Son action part de ses idées.
Comment guidez-vous le comédien Philippe Girard, qui incarne Mitterrand ?
O. P. : Philippe Girard ne lui ressemble pas physiquement mais possède à la fois l’autorité de la parole et quelque chose de dur, de combatif, d’inquiet, de douloureux. Il peut porter la dualité des images de Mitterrand, qui apparaissait très sûr de lui tout en vivant une tempête intérieure. Philippe Girard s’est beaucoup documenté jusqu’à bien connaître tous les dossiers et les faits que le texte évoque. Je lui ai demandé d’oublier l’imitation et de trouver une autre voie, non pas dans les paroles intimes mais dans les allocations publiques. En travaillant à partir des archives, Philippe Girard s’est imprégné du rythme et des intentions des discours sans singer la couleur de la voix.
Qu’avez-vous appris de la fréquentation de cet homme par l’écriture ?
O. P. : Que l’exercice du pouvoir exige d’avoir une distance, non pas un détachement, ni une désinvolture, mais une capacité de replacer l’anecdote dans la perspective historique, à prendre du champ pour retrouver la force des idées.
