New Morning / soul jazz
Ce n’est pas la première fois qu’Omar foulera ces deux soirs la scène du New Morning. Si ce nom ne dit pas forcément grand-chose aux moins de trente ans, les autres savent que l’on tient là l’une des plus belles voix de la soul jazz venue de Londres, la ville où il est né le 14 octobre 1968. Il y a trente ans, ce multi-instrumentiste (trompette, piano, percussions) se révélait sur Talkin’ Loud, après un premier album publié sur le label paternel, Kongo Records, dont la chanson-titre (There’s Nothing Like This) flirtera avec le top des charts pop. Ce sera le début d’une décennie dorée pour ce petit prince de la soul anglaise, qui va intégrer l’écurie RCA, et collaboré avec notamment Stevie Wonder et Common. Pourtant, à l’heure des années 2.0, son nom va peu à peu disparaître des bacs à disques, enregistrant de loin en loin, alors même que la nu soul teintée de jazz dont il fut un pionnier touche enfin un large public. Une injustice que chacun se devra de réparer en allant l’écouter et en consultant la récente anthologie qui revient sur ses plus beaux titres.
