Qu’est-ce qui vous relie à l’écriture de Sarah Kane ?
Benjamin Duval : Le rejet d’un théâtre du divertissement. Le théâtre ne doit en aucun cas verser dans la récréation pure, il a tout à y perdre. Il est commun de considérer l’œuvre de Kane comme étant macabre, indécente ou voyeuriste. Mais fuir indéfiniment les problématiques de l’existence et de sa finitude en ne répondant qu’aux sollicitations permanentes des puissants lobbys du divertissement, c’est cela qui est macabre, et c’est contre cela qu’Artaud, Bond, Barker ou Kane ont fondé l’essence de leur travail.

Quels ont été les principaux enjeux de votre travail de mise en scène ?
B. D. : Le désir d’évanescence de la conscience du personnage principal vient invariablement se cogner aux contraintes de l’enveloppe corporelle et à ses souffrances. D’où le désir de s’en séparer en lui donnant la mort. Il fallait donc avant tout représenter cette omniprésence corporelle, sans pour autant tomber dans la restriction d’une représentation d’un corps social. Dans ma mise en scène précédente, La Nuit juste avant les forêts de Koltès, la performance était retransmise en direct sur le web où une centaine d’anonymes pouvait suivre, assidument ou non, la consumation solitaire du personnage qui, chaque soir, s’adressait peut-être à l’un ou l’ensemble d’entre eux. L’adresse à la fois directe et indéfinie, via une caméra – mais sans diffusion extérieure au théâtre, cette fois – est ici reprise. L’absence totale de repère spatio-temporel, dans 4.48 Psychose, me permet d’approfondir mes recherches dans cette direction.
Qu’est-ce qui vous a décidé à choisir Lucie Boscher pour interpréter ce texte ?
B. D. : Le tout pour un acteur, c’est d’être prêt à ne jamais l’être. Ce n’est qu’après avoir intégré cela qu’il peut alors envisager l’excellence en étant en capacité d’entamer un dialogue triangulaire entre lui, le texte et le reste de l’équipe artistique. C’est parce que Lucie fait partie de ces rares interprètes que je l’ai sollicitée, et aussi pour sa grande intelligence, sa beauté singulière, sa générosité, la clarté de sa voix.
