C’est dans le cadre de ses actions de diffusion théâtrale décentralisée que La Comédie de Béthune s’associe au Conseil général du Pas-de-Calais pour donner corps à Scènes vagabondes. Ayant pour vocation d’aller à la rencontre de populations qui, dans leur grande majorité, ne font pas partie des publics se déplaçant jusqu’aux salles de théâtre, de « proposer aux communes un projet de qualité accessible au plus grand nombre », ce programme s’organise, pour sa quatrième édition, autour de la thématique du progrès. Une thématique que Catherine Pavet et Bruno Tuchszer — dirigés par Blandine Savetier — investissent à travers un spectacle composé de multiples saynètes, de textes brefs de Mario Batista, Rudi Beckaert, Marie Desplechin, Rodrigo Garcia, Koffi Kwahulé, Tom Lanoye, Patrick Ourednik et Carl-Henning Wijmark. Investissant des établissements scolaires, des cafés, des bibliothèques, mais aussi des domiciles de particuliers, les deux comédiens portent ainsi le théâtre dans des espaces non théâtraux, font face à des néo-spectateurs fréquemment traversés par des sentiments contradictoires : la méfiance vis-à-vis de la « chose culturelle », la curiosité et l’envie du spectacle.
La Comédie de Béthune sur les routes du Pas-de-Calais
Très vite, les regards s’ouvrent et les esprits se détendent. Car le sujet du progrès, de la modernité, non seulement concerne chacun d’entre nous, mais est propice à une drôlerie, à un sens de la dérision, à une piquante lucidité, que les auteurs réunis dans ce On n’arrête pas le progrès n’ont pas hésité à exploiter. Extrait* : « Quand je pense à l’homme primitif en train de s’extasier devant ce coucher de soleil, de le contempler, d’en jouir, car il le mérite, car il mérite cette contemplation, je ne peux pas m’empêcher de penser : voilà ce qu’on est devenu, voilà où on en est… » S’aidant d’une boîte à jouer transformable, les interprètes disent et chantent, adressent à ce public d’ « inhabitués de théâtre » des dialogues qui, souvent, égratignent notre époque, notre propension à la surconsommation, notre attrait pour la nouveauté, pointent du doigt les nombreux inconvénients d’un progrès bien difficile à définir. D’ailleurs, comme s’interroge l’un des personnages : « Si il n’y a que des inconvénients, est-ce qu’on peut encore parler de véritable progrès ? ».
