A la question « Pourquoi vous intéresser aujourd’hui à Tchekhov ? », Claudia Stavisky répond en un éclair, sans tergiverser : « Parce que par les temps qui courent, nous avons tous besoin d’un surplus d’humanité ! ». Un surplus d’humanité qui s’exprime — dans Oncle Vania comme dans la plupart des pièces de l’écrivain russe — par le biais d’une communauté de personnages troublants, complexes, faisant preuve d’une profondeur et d’une ambivalence passionnantes, des personnages qui cherchent désespérément le sens de l’existence, se heurtent à la dureté d’un monde sans horizon. « Aucun d’entre eux n’est une femme ou un homme idéal, note Claudia Stavisky. Tchekhov considère des êtres, il ne décerne ni blâmes ni médailles, offre aux uns et aux autres un spectre d’humanité très large. Chacun porte un morceau de vérité. Par exemple, on pourrait raconter la pièce ainsi : “La nuit où Elena, pour la première fois, a été surprise par une montée de son propre désir”. Et on pourrait procéder de la même façon, en racontant la pièce du point de vue de chacun des personnages, en arrivant toujours au même croisement de routes : le désir, qui, dans Oncle Vania, ne sera jamais joué. »
Surplus d’humanité
Pour ses premiers pas à travers l’œuvre d’Anton Tchekhov, la directrice du théâtre des Célestins de Lyon s’est entourée de Didier Bénureau (Vania), Jean-Pierre Bagot (Teleguine), Marie Bunel (Elena), Georges Claisse (Serebriakov), Joséphine Derenne (Marina), Agnès Sourdillon (Sonia), Philippe Torreton (Astrov) et Maria Verdi (Maria). Des comédiens qu’elle a souhaité orienter au plus près d’un théâtre de l’intime, un théâtre capable de composer chaque nuance des paysages d’automne — automne caniculaire, orageux, chauffé à blanc — auxquels les personnages d’Oncle Vania prennent part. S’attachant à investir toute la richesse de cet univers polychrome, Claudia Stavisky et son décorateur (Christian Fenouillat) ont imaginé un espace dans lequel le moindre souffle de l’acteur doit être perceptible, où toutes les voix parallèles et distinctes doivent pouvoir se déployer. Un espace au sein duquel « des personnages se croisent, des corps s’entrechoquent, rebondissent, et conduisent à la scène suivante, comme des boules sur une table de billard ».
