Négligé en son temps, oublié au siècle suivant, Shakespeare prend sa revanche sous l’ère romantique. « Un monument à Shakespeare, s’écrie Victor Hugo, à quoi bon ? La statue qu’il s’est faite à lui-même vaut mieux : Shakespeare n’a pas besoin d’une pyramide, il a son œuvre ». À l’image d’Hugo, les compositeurs du XIXè siècle ont eux aussi succombé au génie shakespearien. Entouré de deux jeunes voix françaises, Yoel Levi, chef principal de la formation francilienne, chemine dans le grand répertoire lyrique et inscrit à son programme l’air de Giulietta « O quante volte » dans I Capuleti e I Montecchi de Bellini, le Duo Nanetta-Fenton dans Falstaff de Verdi, des extraits des Roméo et Juliette de Berlioz (Scherzo de la Reine Mab) et Gounod (entre autres la Cavatine de Roméo « Oui son ardeur a troublé »), sans oublier deux pages symphoniques majeures : l’ouverture du Songe d’une nuit d’été de Mendelssohn et l’Ouverture fantaisie Roméo et Juliette de Tchaïkovski. Autant de musiques directement inspirées par le dramaturge anglais…
