One of a Kind, ballet en trois actes, l’une des rares œuvres longues de Jiří Kylián, est une recherche existentielle. Recherche de l’être dans un monde inaccessible, recherche d’un sentiment d’unité, recherche de certitudes qui ne soient pas étouffantes, et avant tout, recherche de ce qui fait d’une personne un être particulier et unique au monde. La vingtaine de danseurs, vêtus sobrement de chandails et d’habits aux couleurs sombres, inscrivent dans l’air une calligraphie des corps qui semble se situer à la limite de l’impossible, passant d’une vitesse vertigineuse à la lenteur de la méditation zen, comme détachée des contingences humaines. La partition musicale de Brett Dean emprunte à John Cage et Britten ou aux madrigaux de Gesualdo et à la world music, sans oublier un violoncelle qui occupe le plateau, et elle magnifie une danse déliée et virtuose. La scénographie évolutive de l’architecte japonais Atsushi Kitagawara, les relations spatiales ainsi qu’une variation extrêmement riche et abondante de mouvements dansés créent des images poétiques intenses, mystérieuses et insaisissables.
