L’Opéra Hélikon voit le jour en 1990 sous l’impulsion de son turbulent metteur en scène Dmitri Bertman alors inconnu et âgé de 23 ans… En quelques années, installé dans un superbe palais moscovite du XVIIIe siècle, l’Opéra-Théâtre Hélikon va imposer une nouvelle manière russe d’aborder le répertoire d’opéra, créative et stimulante, aux antipodes des conventions du très prévisible Bolchoï voisin… Maniant comme personne l’humour et la provocation (mais pas seulement), Bertman a largement contribué a faire entrer la vie lyrique russe dans le XXIè siècle et le circuit international. « Il fallait en finir avec les concerts en costumes et les excès de symboles, qui ne peuvent à eux seuls remplacer la vérité dramatique » résume-t-il. Désormais célèbre dans le monde entier, l’Opéra Hélikon est, en France, l’invité régulier de l’Opéra de Massy. Une association fructueuse qui a débuté en 2004 avec Nabucco et aboutit aujourd’hui à la reprise d’un autre ouvrage de Verdi : Aïda. Cet opéra célèbre est proposé dans la production présentée en 2001 au festival de Strasbourg dans laquelle Bertman explique avoir voulu « replacer l’attention sur le conflit, présent dans la musique, entre l’homme et le mécanisme insensible de l’état… La clé de la compréhension de cette œuvre est le tendre et délicat des violons, écrasé dès l’Ouverture par un orchestre qui s’abat sur lui » ajoute-t-il. Quelques jours plus tard sur la même scène, Bertman livrera aussi sa vision de L’Affaire Makropoulos, ouvrage majeur et rare de Janacek dont on célèbre cette année le 80è anniversaire de la disparition. Avec l’Orchestre de l’Opéra de Massy, les voix solistes et les chœurs de l’Opéra Hélikon et Dominique Rouits pour la direction musicale.
