Comme il l’a fait en avril à Philadelphie, Christoph Eschenbach a invité le chef américain John Axelrod à diriger la Troisième Symphonie « Kaddish » de Leonard Bernstein avec l’Orchestre de Paris. Cette œuvre de 1963 pour récitant, soprano, chœurs et orchestre, l’une des plus personnelles et ambitieuses de l’auteur de West Side Story, a été plusieurs fois révisée, le compositeur recherchant un discours tout à la fois intime et universel. Elle est présentée ici avec le nouveau texte qu’avait souhaité Bernstein ; il est dû à son ami Samuel Pisar, survivant de la Shoah, qui en sera le récitant. Le reste du concert est placé sous le signe de la résistance, avec l’ouverture Egmont de Beethoven et le Concertino de Wladyslav Szpilmann (1911-2000), rendu célèbre par le film de Roman Polanski, Le Pianiste.
