Depuis 1984, l’Orchestre des Jeunes de la Méditerranée Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur développe, depuis Marseille, son projet singulier d’orchestre symphonique-école. Cette formation composée de presque cent jeunes musiciens venus de 20 pays différents contribue non seulement à former de jeunes instrumentistes au métier de musicien d’orchestre (comme le fait aussi l’Orchestre Français des Jeunes), mais aussi à ouvrir un espace de dialogue interculturel au sein du « continent » méditerranéen. Longtemps discrète, son action a beaucoup gagné en visibilité depuis que la formation a intégré, en mai 2014, l’Académie du Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. En participant au Festival d’Avignon, il franchit une nouvelle étape sur le chemin du plein rayonnement de son projet. Sous la direction du chef d’orchestre milanais Carlo Rizzi,directeur de l’Opéra national du Pays de Galles et familier de Covent Garden, l’orchestre interprètera, après avoir bénéficié de l’encadrement des musiciens du London Symphony Orchestra, le Concerto pour Orchestre de la compositrice serbe Ana Sokolovic (née en 1968), créé en 2006 par l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal sous la direction de Kent Nagano, et la Quatrième symphonie (pour soprano solo et orchestre) de Mahler, chef-d’œuvre du compositeur viennois.
