Kurt Masur revient à la musique d’un compositeur qu’il n’a de cesse de défendre : Mendelssohn, immense compositeur « parfois tenu à l’écart, écouté avec condescendance, considéré comme un classique attardé parmi les romantiques. Ce sont des idées reçues dont j’aimerais montrer qu’elles ne sont pas fondées » déclarait récemment le grand chef allemand à Christian Wasselin dans un entretien publié sur le site de Radio-France. Il aborde ici l’oratorio Paulus comptant justement parmi les œuvres du compositeur les plus injustement sous-programmées (avec le Chœur et la Maîtrise de Radio France et les voix solistes de Ruth Ziesak, Christianne Stotijn, Topi Lehtipuu et Matthias Goerne). Deux semaines plus tard au Châtelet, l’italien Daniele Gatti, qui a succédé à Masur au poste de directeur musical de l’Orchestre national de France, poursuivra de son côté son aventure mahlérienne avec des extraits du Cor merveilleux de l’enfant (avec toujours le prodigieux baryton Matthias Goerne) et la Symphonie n° 1. Enfin, entre ces deux dates et toujours avec Goerne à l’honneur, disciple magnifique de Fischer-Dieskau, les solistes de l’orchestre se seront partagés la scène avec David Fray (piano) dans le Quatuor n° 12 «Quartettsatz» et des Lieder de Schubert, les Lieder écossais de Beethoven, la Cantate n° 82 de Bach et les Chants sérieux d’Eisler.
