La musique de Chostakovitch a souvent été lue au regard de sa propre histoire et de celle du monde soviétique. Sa Cinquième Symphonie (1937) le fit rentrer en grâce parce qu’elle parut célébrer la force de la Révolution. Pouvait-on ne pas y voir aussi le pathétique du largo, laissant ouvert le doute sur le sens de l’œuvre ? Ce sentiment est aussi présent dans le Requiem pour cordes que le Japonais Toru Takemitsu écrivit après la mort d’un ami proche. On le retrouve encore, sous la virtuosité brillante des Variations Paganini de Rachmaninov (jouées ici par le pianiste Romain Descharmes en soliste), dans la citation du Dies Irae, lugubre contre-chant.
