Un peu mal aimé du public et des médias français (mais aussi du monde musical berlinois…), le chef allemand Christian Thielemann, héritier du modèle traditionnel des grands Kapellmeister d’outre-Rhin, a pourtant su gagner l’adhésion d’orchestres de la stature de la Staatskapelle de Dresde dont il est le nouveau directeur musical ou des Wiener Philharmoniker, comme en témoigne ce concert. Charismatique et conservateur, souvent adepte de tempos lents et de climats sombres, se jouant des masses sonores et des textures en véritable architecte, Christian Thielemann est une personnalité à part, soucieuse de s’inscrire dans la tradition plus que de séduire ou provoquer. Son répertoire, limité, est concentré sur le grand répertoire romantique germanique. Une dizaine d’années après une intégrale londonienne assez unanimement contestée des symphonies de Schumann, il revient aujourd’hui en concert au grand compositeur saxon en dirigeant l’Ouverture, Scherzo et Finale op. 52 ; la Symphonie n° 1 ; Fantaisie pour violon op. 131 (avec Rainer Küchl en soliste)
et enfin la (géniale) Symphonie n° 4.
