Quels sentiments particuliers procure le fait d’assister et surtout de participer à la « résurrection » d’un orgue ?
Francesco Filidei : Lorsqu’on parle d’un orgue, on se sent souvent obligé d’employer des termes attachés à un contexte religieux. L’orgue de Royaumont est placé dans un endroit favorable à une utilisation plus libre de ses potentialités, pour se confronter à des réalités nouvelles. C’est pour cette raison que je ressens fortement l’importance de ce moment qui, je l’espère, sera le début d’un long parcours de recherche pour tous les organistes et compositeurs.
Jacques Lenot : Il ne s’agit pas d’une résurrection, l’orgue était simplement muet depuis plusieurs années. Dès l’origine, le Cavaillé-Coll de Royaumont n’était pas un orgue d’église. En tant que compositeur pour l’instrument, j’ai surtout travaillé avec des instruments d’église. Pour moi, c’est une situation nouvelle et différente.
Parlez-nous de cet instrument…
Francesco Filidei : Lors de ma première venue à Royaumont, en 2000, j’avais tout de suite remarqué ce grand monstre qui reposait dans un coin du réfectoire. J’avais pensé alors à d’autres monstres endormis que j’avais connus en Italie, vieux gardiens de leur prison qu’on laissait mourir lentement. Je n’aurais jamais pensé pouvoir un jour être l’un des organistes qui l’aideraient à retrouver la parole. Il s’agit d’un instrument qui dispose d’une richesse de timbres étonnants et de couleurs uniques.

Comment avez-vous abordé ce nouveau travail de composition en référence à Ligeti ?
Jacques Lenot : Il se trouve que je me suis longtemps réclamé de la musique de Ligeti et c’est naturellement que l’on a pensé à moi, car je suis un des rares compositeurs français qui se préoccupe d’écrire à la fois pour l’orgue et le piano. Mais je pense aussi à Franz Liszt, pianiste extraordinaire qui, progressivement en se tournant vers la religion, a intégré l’instrument « orgue » dans sa musique, sans oublier évidemment Jean-Sébastien Bach qui passait naturellement du clavecin à l’orgue. Ma démarche est différente mais il y a un lien entre Ligeti et Franz Liszt et ce lien, c’est le clavier. Il se trouve aussi que la musique d’orgue de Ligeti est profane et que Royaumont est un lieu désacralisé.
Créer une nouvelle littérature pour orgue : contresens historique ou véritable défi musical ?
Jacques Lenot : En fait, je m’inscris dans une tradition organistique qui irait de Nicolas de Grigny a Olivier Messiaen. Je n’invente rien, je continue.
Francesco Filidei : Une nouvelle littérature existe, a existé, et, je crois existera toujours, sans interruption ni contresens. De Frescobaldi à Bach, de Franck à Liszt, de Messiaen à Guillou, de Xenakis à Pesson et Lenot. La littérature organistique, si on regarde bien, n’a jamais connu de véritable rupture. Elle continuera à suivre son chemin avec de nombreux jeunes compositeurs tels que Regis Campo, Mauro Lanza ou Noriko Baba.
