L’admiration jamais démentie que Berlioz porta à la musique de Gluck est un exemple rare de dévotion artistique confraternelle et presque amoureuse. C’est, dit-on, l’audition d’Iphigénie en Tauride, dès son arrivée à Paris en 1821, qui convainquit Berlioz du rôle éminent de l’orchestre dans la construction dramatique à l’opéra. Le compositeur de la Symphonie fantastique, qui devait puiser dans l’œuvre de Gluck nombre d’exemples pour son Traité d’instrumentation, voua dès lors une large part de son temps à la mise en œuvre d’éditions les plus authentiques possibles des opéras du maître admiré. Il prépara notamment la reprise d’Orphée et Eurydice (dans sa version française de 1774) au Théâtre Lyrique, adaptant le rôle d’Orphée pour la voix de Pauline Viardot. Les solistes de l’Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra national de Paris et les chanteurs du Jeune Chœur de Paris s’inscrivent aujourd’hui dans cette glorieuse tradition, dirigés par Geoffroy Jourdain et mis en scène par Dominique Pitoiset et Stephen Taylor.
