Exilé en raison de son opposition à la dictature chilienne, le directeur de l’Aleph, Oscar Castro, est arrivé en France en 1976. Il y introduisit des formules inédites : Théâtre d’Intervention, Theâtre des Gens et des Métiers, autant de pistes qui dans la lignée d’Augusto Boal veulent faire du théâtre un instrument d’exploration de soi et du monde ouvert à tous. Que reste-t-il aujourd’hui de ce souffle initial, produit des utopies soixante-huitardes et sud-américaines ? Peut-être l’apprendra-t-on de la bouche de José Miranda – derrière lequel on devine un double de l’auteur… Oscar Castro annonce en effet que son texte « est un procès fait à la religion et à l’art engagé ». Dans la station de métro Assemblée Nationale fermée pour la nuit, Miranda, homme de théâtre, croise ainsi des personnages étranges parmi lesquels Mère Térésa – qui ne croit plus en la vie éternelle – et le diable, à savoir Adel Hakim. A la ville, le diable est aussi co-directeur du théâtre des Quartiers d’Ivry et metteur en scène de la pièce. Un signe de plus que pour l’Aleph, entre la vie et la scène, il faut abattre les frontières.
