Placée, dans la production lyrique très fournie de Rossini, entre Le Barbier de Séville et La Cenerentola, son Otello, d’après Shakespeare, détonne. Créée en 1816 au Théâtre San Carlo de Naples, l’œuvre a depuis souffert de la comparaison avec le chef-d’œuvre de Verdi, composé quelque soixante-dix ans plus tard et qui bénéficia d’un livret autrement dramatique que celui que Rossini obtint de Francesca Maria Berio. Cependant, et même si l’on ne peut y trouver la verve des opéras-bouffes du compositeur, cet opera seria de bonne facture réserve quelques moments brillants pour l’orchestre et surtout pour les voix : l’écriture se fait particulièrement virtuose pour les deux rôles de ténors (Otello et Iago) et recèle quelques moments de pure magie, telle la déploration de Desdémone (« Assisa a piè d’un salice ») au troisième acte, dont le rôle est ici confié à la grande Anna Caterina Antonacci.
