Le destin a parfois de ces clins d’œil tragiques ! L’an dernier, le jour même de la création d’Outsider, « opéra transatlantique d’après les chemins croisés d’Elia Kazan et Jules Dassin », on apprenait la mort de ce dernier. La coïncidence avait presque valeur de justification pour un ouvrage dont le principe est justement de mêler les temps, l’hier et l’aujourd’hui, et de rendre contemporain ce qui appartient à l’histoire. Le public est convié à flâner entre deux rives aux atmosphères contrastées. Sur la Péniche Adélaïde, une taverne grecque est reconstituée : monde ancien, figé, semble-t-il, dans un temps immobile, mais qui reste le lieu ultime de l’inspiration. Sur la Péniche Opéra, c’est New York, la ville mondiale, carrefour des cultures où le compositeur Anatoli, personnage principal de l’opéra (chanté par Vincent Bouchot), tente de trouver l’inspiration pour un opéra sur Elia Kazan. Cette mise en abyme et l’opposition des univers sur lesquels repose le livret de May Bouhada se retrouvent dans la musique d’Alexandros Markéas, qu’interprètent en toute complicité les musiciens de l’ensemble 2e2m dirigés par Pierre Roullier. À New York, le rythme syncopé du jazz ou de la comédie musicale, soutenu par une instrumentation abrasive (piano, saxophone, violoncelle et contrebasse) ; en Grèce, les mélopées de l’accordéon, de la guitare et du piano inspirées au compositeur par la musique traditionnelle méditerranéenne.
