Quelle est la genèse de ce projet ?
Rachid Ouramdane : Gigi Cristoforetti, directeur d’Aterballetto, une compagnie du nord de l’Italie, m’a demandé de réfléchir à un projet sur le corps vieillissant – surtout celui des danseurs. Nous cherchions un chorégraphe, car je ne devais pas faire partie de cette aventure en tant qu’artiste. J’ai tout de suite pensé à Angelin Preljocaj qui a plusieurs cordes à son arc. Puis, Angelin a annoncé que sa pièce serait assez courte. C’est alors que j’ai imaginé une sorte de première partie uniquement pour Chaillot dans le Grand foyer. Ensuite Gigi m’a demandé si ce geste pouvait aller sur scène et construire une soirée entière…

Qu’est-ce qui vous a intéressés dans le fait de travailler avec des corps âgés ?
Angelin Preljocaj : Ce sont des corps qui nous disent autre chose en soubassement, car ils diffusent quelque chose de singulier, lié au temps, à la vie. Un mouvement pratiqué par un corps âgé n’a pas la même résonance. Ce n’est pas qu’une question de puissance mais presque de matérialité du corps, liée à ce qu’il a traversé et qui finit par s’inscrire au plus profond des chairs.

R.O. : Le vieillissement n’est pas forcément synonyme de renonciation ou d’amoindrissement. D’où mon titre, Un jour nouveau, qui ne sonne pas comme une fin mais comme un départ. Je souhaitais travailler sur un bloc de vie, un bloc d’histoire. Assez naturellement j’ai pensé au music-hall, qui représentait pour moi la danse d’avant, de la nostalgie, du passé, où la figure du couple est très présente. Je voulais aborder la maturation d’une relation de couple, et j’ai commencé à chercher un duo de danseurs âgés.

R.O. : On m’a fait découvrir Darryl Woods, qui vient des États-Unis, a dansé au Harlem Ballet, pratiqué la tap dance, la danse classique, le jazz, le chant, le music-hall. Puis il est venu en Europe, où il a travaillé avec Alain Platel, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Mark Tompkins…. Herma Vos a connu le Lido, tous les grands cabarets parisiens. Elle a été membre du Grand orchestre du Splendid, en couverture de France Soir, photographiée avec Sylvester Stallone, Alain Delon…
A.P. : J’ai organisé trois auditions à Paris, à Aix et à Reggio Emilia. Trois cents personnes se sont présentées que j’ai réparties en trois catégories. Les non-danseurs que j’ai vus en premier lieu, les danseurs amateurs ensuite, et une catégorie d’anciens danseurs professionnels que j’ai sélectionnés en fin de journée car je ne voulais pas qu’ils captent toute l’attention. Cela m’a permis de recruter des non-danseurs, venus parce que le projet les passionnait, et de découvrir des pépites, des personnalités, des corps surprenants. Dans la distribution finale ils sont tous mélangés et ont entre 69 et 81 ans. Ils ont une énergie, un vrai désir, des personnalités très attachantes. Mon exigence de la danse reste très aiguisée, le processus de création est plus long à mettre en place que d’habitude mais c’est très stimulant.
