Où trouver les belles filles à Rome, comment engager la conversation, comment voler les premiers baisers et une première étreinte, comment transformer sa conquête en amour durable, comment gagner la complaisance des servantes, comment s’habiller, se coiffer, se maquiller : l’Art d’aimer est un précieux manuel pour qui veut apprendre à séduire et à aimer, mais aussi, comme le remarque Jean-Claude Idée, une « ode à la liberté sexuelle des femmes ». Cette apparence licencieuse et l’irrévérence dont Ovide fait preuve dans cet ouvrage déplurent à Auguste, qui exila le poète et fit brûler son ouvrage. « Sous l’humour et l’érotisme omniprésents, affleure la gravité d’un hymne aux libertés démocratiques, car l’asservissement du corps des femmes est souvent l’un des premiers symptômes de l’établissement d’une tyrannie », remarque le metteur en scène. Ovide était mon maître fait entendre des extraits de L’Art d’aimer sur fond du récit de la petite esclave que le poète, en route pour la relégation à Tome, aux bords de la Mer Noire, sauva d’un bordel de Corinthe. Julie Judd raconte la vie et les combats de son maître, incarné par Pierre Santini. Un duo de charme pour rappeler que l’amour et la liberté forment le plus beau couple qui soit !
