Créé en 1923 au Châtelet, après le triomphe de la vague des ballets russes, l’unique opéra de Roussel connaît un succès immédiat qui sera suivi d’un oubli durable, totalement inexplicable. L’ouvrage, bâti sur une grande légende indienne dont l’action se situe au XIIIè siècle, recèle pourtant des qualités exceptionnelles, musicales évidemment – l’orchestre de Roussel, exotique et universel, sonne magnifiquement – mais aussi visuelles, ouvrant d’innombrables possibilités scéniques : importance des chorégraphies, décors et costumes du bout du monde, etc… Ce que souligne aussi Jean-Luc Choplin, directeur du Châtelet, à qui revient l’idée de cette nouvelle production : « Avec Padmâvatî, Roussel avait réinventé le genre de l’opéra-ballet à la française créé par Lully. Cet ouvrage concentre en à peine une heure et demie de nombreux éléments artistiques : un grand orchestre symphonique, d’importantes masses chorales, des danseurs virtuoses, des solistes de renom et des costumes somptueux… ».
Fidèle à son credo de faire entrer dans le monde de l’opéra de nouvelles signatures internationales, Choplin a confié la mise en scène de cette production au réalisateur de cinéma indien Sanjay Leela Bhansali, célèbre depuis son film Devdas en 2002, présenté en ouverture du Festival de Cannes et nominé aux Oscars. La musique est au cœur de ses productions cinématographiques pour lesquelles il reconnaît ne commencer la réalisation qu’après avoir entièrement défini son univers musical. Cet ancrage de son art dans la matière musicale, mais aussi ses talents de chorégraphe, le prédisposait naturellement à la mise en scène d’opéra. Avec l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio-France, le Choeur du Châtelet, Tanusree Shankar pour la chorégraphie, et dans les principaux rôles Marie-Nicole Lemieux (Padmâvatî), Finnur Bjarnason (Ratan-Sen), Alain Fondary (Alaouddin) et Yann Beuron (Le Brahmane).
