En 1923, au lendemain des grands succès des Ballets russes, c’est-à-dire en une époque de renouveau de l’art scénique et des collaborations d’artistes pour la production de ballets, Albert Roussel crée Padmâvatî. On peut y voir une renaissance de l’opéra-ballet qui avait connu ses heures de gloire avec Lully : en une heure et demi, un orchestre symphonique, des chœurs, des danseurs, des chanteurs sont réunis, dans un décor et des costumes somptueux, pour une grande fresque qui nous transporte dans l’empire mongol du XIIIe siècle. La re-création de 2008 sera dirigée par le chef d’orchestre Lawrence Foster, à la tête de l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. Mais ce sont deux Indiens, Sanjay Leela Bhansali et Tanursee Shankar, qui assureront la mise en scène et la chorégraphie, confrontant l’Inde rêvée par Louis Laloy (l’auteur du livret) aux savoir-faire des artistes indiens contemporains.
