A l’instar des Persans de Montesquieu, Charlotte-Elisabeth de Bavière, épouse de Philippe d’Orléans, observa la France, la pétaudière versaillaise, les courtisans ridicules et les dévots malfaisants du papisme meurtrier avec l’ironie et l’objectivité d’un point de vue distancié et critique. Ni la rigueur imbécile de l’étiquette, ni les piques de l’infâme et bigote Maintenon qu’elle exécrait, ne parvinrent à faire plier cette âme sensible et intelligente qui se vengea de la médiocrité de la cour en s’en faisant la mémorialiste assidue. Drôles, alertes et colorées, ses lettres à sa famille allemande constituent un des témoignages les plus précieux sur le siècle de Louis XIV. Sensible à la misère du peuple et aux bassesses des méchants, atterrée par les cabales et par le sort fait aux Protestants, scandalisée par la guerre et les privations que le caprice de Louis XIV impose à l’Europe, la « commère de France » apparaît comme un personnage sympathique et épatant de finesse.
Un élégant travail
Confiant à Marie Grudzinski le soin de camper Madame de son mariage jusqu’à sa mort, Jean-Claude Seguin trouve en elle un tempérament à la hauteur de son personnage. La comédienne réussit avec une aisance incroyable à ressusciter cette princesse atypique, jouant subtilement de l’accent, des mimiques et des poses pour faire le portrait d’une héroïne à l’abattage formidable dont l’intelligence acérée se maintient dans un regard pétillant d’humanité alors que les ans ravagent et enrobent sa solide carcasse de Bavaroise. Au fur et à mesure du temps, la pétulante Liselotte se change en douairière imposante et Marie Grudzinski réussit à transformer l’aspect de son rôle qu’elle investit avec une vérité sidérante. Un travail remarquable.
