Joe Penhall appartient à la nouvelle génération de dramaturges anglais qui savent, à l’instar du maître Pinter, décortiquer l’âme humaine et faire surgir la profondeur du malaise existentiel sous l’apparence légèreté des dialogues. Pale Horse offre, à travers la rencontre entre Charles, patron de bar qui vient de perdre sa femme et se débat avec les démons de la culpabilité, et Lucy, jeune naufragée venue s’échouer à son comptoir, une vision des incertitudes instables de la société moderne et du décalage creusé entre une normalité discutable et une marge de plus en plus mouvante. Evitant le naturalisme plat qui rendrait l’anecdote creuse comme le didactisme analytique qui rendrait le propos sentencieux, Joe Penhall parvient à une forme d’universalité psychologique et sociologique qui dresse le portrait de la société occidentale moderne en ses errements et ses doutes. Thierry Lavat s’empare de cette partition au déséquilibre en syncope et confie à Jauris Casanova et Isabelle Jeanbrau le soin d’incarner ces deux désaxés.
