Joe Penhall appartient à la nouvelle génération de dramaturges anglais qui tâchent, à l’instar du maître Pinter, de décortiquer l’âme humaine et de faire surgir la profondeur du malaise existentiel sous l’apparente légèreté des dialogues. Pale Horse offre, à travers la rencontre entre Charles, patron de bar qui vient de perdre sa femme et se débat avec les démons de la culpabilité, et Lucy, jeune naufragée venue s’échouer à son comptoir et bientôt dans son lit, une vision des affres de la société moderne où l’indifférence tient lieu d’affection, le machisme rudoyant de séduction, où on menace qui se refuse et tue qui devient menaçant, incapable de trouver le temps, le courage et les mots pour dire les choses autrement que sous le masque commode d’un cynisme protecteur. Rien ne permet vraiment de sauver les âmes mortes de ces deux épaves, ni les ministres ridicules d’un culte impuissant, ni l’affection distante de parents insensibles, ni les conseils inefficaces d’un médecin blasé. Seul l’alcool apparaît comme soulagement, les deux personnages s’accrochant ainsi au bar comme à un ponton et à l’autre comme à une amarre, incapables néanmoins de résister à la noyade.
Un spectacle noir et violent
Entre deux hoquets éthyliques, on assiste donc à la chevauchée brinquebalante de ces désaxés sentimentaux dont le besoin de consolation est vraiment impossible à rassasier. Thierry Lavat confie à Jauris Casanova et Isabelle Jeanbrau le soin d’incarner ces deux malheureux qu’entourent Christian Loustau, Gérald Maillet et, en alternance, Laurence Kelepikis et Sandra Faure. Dans un décor ingénieusement modulable, les comédiens jouent du cri et de l’éructation pour signifier la violence des rapports de force entre les êtres. Sans concessions à la douceur, sans demi-teintes, sans pause dans ce tango de la débine où les corps se cherchent et s’affrontent avec brutalité, où les répliques cinglent et mordent, le spectacle est à l’image de la dureté sociétale qu’il illustre, tout en uppercuts et en tensions. Virulents et agressifs, les acteurs déploient une énergie farouche et servent le texte avec une intensité ébouriffante.
