Symbole sonore immédiatement reconnaissable de la musique caribéenne, le steel drum est cette percussion faite à l’origine d’un bidon d’essence dont le couvercle est martelé de bosses concaves. Le Pamberri fut fondé il y a 20 ans là où le Steel drum est né, en pleine mer des Antilles, sur l’île de la Trinité. Steel band traditionnel de trente musiciens, leur répertoire est celui du carnaval – une institution à Trinidad, fête déambulatoire et populaire. Tout genre musical peut dès lors être détourné en faveur de la danse et de la fête, de la musique contemporaine au jazz, avec évidemment de larges emprunts aux standards du calypso.
