Pantagleize est l’un de ces anti-héros grotesques qui, de situations saugrenues en quiproquos, égratignent sans le vouloir le vernis des conventions et des mises en jeux sociales. Un être candide et maladroit mettant à mal, par le regard décalé qu’il porte sur ce qui l’entoure, l’ordre de marche du monde. Entraîné, par accident, à la tête d’une action révolutionnaire dont il ne maîtrise ni les tenants ni les aboutissants, ce philosophe plein de naïveté va vivre une journée hors du commun, une journée qui cristallisera toutes les questions qu’il se pose sur lui-même, sur son destin, sur le bonheur, sur le sens de l’existence humaine… « Pantagleize est un personnage absurde titubant dans un monde absurde, indique Philippe Awat. Il est l’homme sans passé, non pas sans projet, mais porteur d’un projet vide, sans contenu, ouvert à tous les possibles. » Un homme atypique, donc, comme hors de la réalité, que le metteur en scène a décidé de placer dans le cadre burlesque et parodique d’un film policier des années 1950. Le résultat, joyeux et dynamique, participe d’un théâtre de divertissement intelligent, d’un théâtre à l’efficacité résolument populaire.

La représentation conçue par Philippe Awat fait se succéder les multiples tableaux et situations de Pantagleize par le biais d’incessants chassés-croisés de panneaux mobiles. Une chambre d’hôtel, une salle de café, un recoin de rue, une salle d’audience… Abordant la pièce de façon très concrète, de manière ouvertement réaliste mais jamais pesante, ce spectacle aux inflexions tant vaudevillesques que dramatiques fait preuve d’une belle habileté scénographique, d’un réel esprit de partage, d’une volonté de chaque instant d’inviter le public au plaisir. Artisans d’un compte à rebours à l’issue annoncée, les neufs interprètes (dont Bruno Paviot dans le rôle-titre) ne ménagent pas leur peine pour entraîner les spectateurs à l’intérieur de cette tragi-comédie allégorique et philosophique. Car au-delà des caricatures et du comique de situation, au-delà de l’intrigue excentrique bâtie par l’auteur belge (1898-1962), Pantagleize projette les ombres de grands questionnements métaphysiques. Les questionnements d’un personnage qui, à l’instar de la femme dont il tombe amoureux, se révèle « si [beau], si détraqu[é], si douleureu[x] qu’on dirait l’humanité même ».
