Trois décennies, depuis sa révélation au public parisien par Aldo Romano au milieu des années 80, que l’on ne rate aucun des épisodes des aventures de ce musicien insatiable, fils sarde de Miles Davis et Chet Baker, dont il a hérité un art frémissant et feutré du son. Sa dernière formation en date, ce superbe Devil Quartet, écho à son Angel Quartet de la fin des années 90, a vu le jour en 2004 et réunit le guitariste Bebo Ferra, le batteur Stefano Bagnoli et le contrebassiste Paolino Dalla Porta, trois complices de longue date. Leur dernier album « Desertico » (chez Bonsai) a suscité l’enthousiasme général de la presse jazz internationale qui a succombé à la splendeur mélodique d’une musique partagée entre l’acoustique et l’électrique, dans un répertoire libre comme l’air qui, entre deux compositions originales, s’offre la fantaisie de la reprise inattendue (et réussie) du (I can’t get no) Satisfaction des Stones.
