« Au moment de mourir, chacun revit, en un éclair, le film de sa vie… explique l’auteur qui, dans Papillon noir, raconte l’histoire d’une « femme qui rentre chez elle le soir. Elle se met à l’aise, se sert un verre à boire, se prépare quelque chose à manger. Elle vient d’avoir un accident de voiture, elle est sous le choc… Cette soirée à laquelle nous assistons est en réalité une traversée de sa mort. » Yann Robin et Yannick Haenel se sont rencontrés en 2009 à la Villa Medicis : « aller vers un genre, prendre un chemin nouveau s’impose souvent de soi-même et devient finalement une évidence , une nécessité et parfois même une obsession. Lors de notre rencontre, nous avions déjà ce désir commun de nous tourner vers la scène, vers l’opéra. Depuis nous avons imaginé et cherché des sujets qui ont tous abouti à des impasses jusqu’à ce projet… » se souvient le compositeur. Leur voyage nous emmène dans un espace impossible à représenter autrement qu’en musique, aux confins de la vie et de la mort, du sacré et du profane. Avec l’ensemble Multilatérale (dont Robin est le directeur artistique) et le choeur Les Métaboles sous la direction de Léo Warynski.
