Les Gitans sont « de grands kidnappeurs d’enfants, spécialement au théâtre », remarquait avec humour Théophile Gautier décrivant Paquita, ballet pantomime de 1846 planté dans le décor stéréotypé – mais savoureux – d’une Espagne pittoresque. Ce ballet rocambolesque, alternant enlèvements, retrouvailles et péripéties, a connu une histoire non moins tumultueuse : initialement créé à Paris, il disparaît rapidement de la scène de l’Opéra ; il est en revanche monté en Russie par Marius Petipa, et des fragments de cette version sont transmis, en 1980, à l’Opéra de Paris… Ce n’est qu’en 2001 que Pierre Lacotte entreprend de reconstituer le ballet dans sa totalité, à partir de documents historiques sur la chorégraphie initiale de Joseph Mazilier, mais aussi en chorégraphiant les parties manquantes « dans l’esprit de l’époque » : le résultat est un ballet haut en couleurs et particulièrement énergique, dont le brio continue de susciter l’enthousiasme.
