En 2001, Pierre Lacotte entreprend de remonter un ballet disparu depuis longtemps : Paquita, de Joseph Mazilier, qui en 1846 avait ébloui l’homme de lettres et critique Théophile Gautier. Pierre Lacotte exhume les archives et le livret du ballet pour composer sa chorégraphie ; il utilise également des variations de Petipa, qui avait remonté Paquita en Russie – variations qui ont continué d’être dansées et transmises. David Coleman révise et orchestre la musique de Deldevez et Minkus, cependant que Luisa Spinatella recrée costumes et décors en s’inspirant des croquis et maquettes de l’époque… Le résultat est un somptueux ballet, au rythme trépidant : les morceaux de bravoure technique et les passages de pantomime se succèdent dans un cadre haut en couleurs, au fil des aventures de Paquita, la charmante danseuse élevée chez les Gitans.
