Ravoire et Dehaze, leader français du papier toilette, est menacé en ses fondements comme en son assise : les Américains montent à l’assaut de l’hygiène française et l’entreprise est au bord du naufrage. Après l’échec du lancement d’un PQ patriotique, la mort du vieux Dehaze et l’arrivée à la tête de l’entreprise de jeunes loups guidés par l’héritier illégitime, la ouate de cellulose « Mousse et Bruyère » sauve Ravoire et Dehaze de la faillite. Ecrite entre 1967 et 1969, la pièce de Michel Vinaver est, à l’instar du reste de son œuvre théâtrale, d’une acuité et d’une prescience hallucinantes dans la description et l’analyse. Remplacement d’un patronat ronronnant et pépère par une meute de jeunes cadres dans le vent, passage du paternalisme débonnaire au cynisme de cadres hyperactifs, abandon des représentants placides au profit de l’efficace universalité publicitaire : tout est là des mutations sociales de la deuxième moitié du vingtième siècle, axées sur la transformation du besoin en désir, génialement illustrée par les débats burlesques autour de l’excrétion dont la pièce est le cadre. Car tout l’enjeu est là pour le capitalisme moderne : comment faire pour remplacer le besoin, nécessairement borné, par le désir, par essence illimité, afin de pouvoir indexer la consommation sur son inflation continue ?
Somme théâtre ; mise en scène au sommet
A l’incroyable clairvoyance politique et morale de Vinaver (qui saisit tout des rapports de force, des modalités renouvelées du pouvoir et des évolutions axiologiques de la société mutante qu’il ausculte), s’ajoute une drôlerie impayable qui tient autant à l’énormité farceuse d’une scatologie finement distillée où l’ordure est dans l’objet et jamais dans la démonstration, qu’à l’art de croquer des personnages hauts en couleurs dont les contours psychologiques sont dessinés avec une précision formidablement efficace. La mise en scène de Christian Schiaretti, qui s’appuie sur la scénographie intelligente et fluide de Renaud de Fontainieu et Fanny Gamet, sert le texte avec une minutie chorégraphique éblouissante. Cette épopée du capitalisme est interprétée par une troupe dirigée de main de maître, dont les comédiens sont aussi justes individuellement qu’en chœur. Le texte de Vinaver, qui joue des glissements, des effets de miroir, des mises en perspective et des mises en abyme, des juxtapositions synchroniques, est remarquablement servi et ingénieusement spatialisé. L’ensemble compose, à tous égards, un spectacle à l’équilibre parfait, et signe la rencontre bienheureuse de talents de haute volée.
