Qui sont les personnages de la pièce de Michel Garneau ?
Marjorie Nakache : Quatre voix de quatre femmes de générations différentes s’entrecroisent dans la pièce de Michel Garneau, qu’il qualifie d’“oratorio“.C’est une histoire de famille, sans intriguemais avec son lot de secrets parfois lourds àporter. Anouk, âgée d’une vingtaine d’années, sort d’une rupture, elle convoque tour à tour sa mère encore vivante, sa grand-mère et son arrière-grand-mère mortes, et engage un dialogue singulier avec chacune d’elles. La mère, femme d’un commis voyageur, est trompée et soumise. La grand-mère, d’un milieu rural, a subi un viol, elle est tombée dans la boisson, et parle une langue crue et libre, sa voix résonne avec celle de la jeune fille sur la liberté du corps. L’arrière-grand-mère, très catholique et assujettie au poids des convenances, a vécu une véritable histoire d’amour avec son homme.

Avez-vous contextualisé la pièce ?
M. N. : La pièce a été écrite en 1973, période engagée et féministe au Québec. La langue recèle des références et tournures québécoises, j’ai fait quelques adaptations pour simplifier, mais j’ai gardé la rugosité et la poésie de la langue, qui évoque l’ancien français, avec des images très fortes, et un rythme entêtant. Nous avons beaucoup travaillé la lumière et l’univers sonore. Un arbre évoque la généalogie et la ruralité. Michel Garneau exprime ici des paroles de femmes du peuple, qui pour certaines ont vécu l’exil en quittant leur terre pour la ville, qui parfois ont connu des mariages arrangés. Chacune expérimente son propre rapport aux hommes. Quatre comédiennes d’univers différents interprètent ces quatre femmes, pour simplement souligner l’humanité des thèmes évoqués : Nabiha Akkari (Anouk) est d’origine maghrébine, Nicole Dogue (la grand-mère) est d’origine antillaise, Agnès Debord donne vie à l’arrière-grand-mère et j’interprète la mère. Les relations familiales demeurent quel que soit le contexte un nœud intemporel et universel.
Que transmettent ces femmes ?
M. N. : Ces mères successives ont souffert, les peurs, les préjugés, le regard des autres rendent l’exercice de la liberté et de l’amour très difficile. Elles veulent aider la plus jeune, mais l’amour des autres exaspère Anouk. L’idée de la transmission, consciente et inconsciente, n’est pas simple, et la pièce, dans sa façon de mettre à jour une palette de relations mère/fille, touche chacun d’entre nous, les femmes comme les hommes.
