À la base de Paso Doble, il y a, de la part de Josef Nadj, un désir inattendu : fréquentant depuis des années l’atelier de Miquel Barcelò, il a ressenti un jour le besoin « d’entrer dans son tableau ». Les deux hommes ont cherché à imaginer une telle rencontre, qui paraissait plus proche du rêve que du projet concret. Comme toujours chez Josef Nadj, la réponse est apparue par le biais du souvenir : « la terre que Miquel utilise, l’argile, est omniprésente à Kanizsa, ma ville natale [ex-Yougoslavie]. Depuis longtemps, cette matière m’incite à faire quelque chose avec elle ». Le résultat est un objet – ou plutôt un moment, car l’œuvre ici ne se laisse pas circonscrire – réjouissant. Pendant une heure, Josef Nadj travaille à toucher le tableau sans briser l’élan du peintre, qui remodèle ses vases d’argile en les projetant sur le corps du chorégraphe : le geste du peintre et celui du danseur se conjuguent pour donner lieu à une série d’objets en terre et d’images qui disparaîtront comme ils sont nés, au fil de la performance.
