Les danses et musiques populaires ont souvent une histoire qui s’apparente à un voyage. Ainsi, le pasodoble est à l’origine une marche militaire. Le peuple espagnol s’est emparé de ce rythme spécifique et le pasodoble est devenu une danse traditionnelle. Il s’ancra ensuite dans l’univers de la corrida, marquant l’entrée des toreros dans l’arène. Puis, en France, il devint une danse de salon strictement codifiée… On comprend qu’une forme artistique porteuse de tant d’histoires ait séduit Michel Kelemenis. Il reprend la figure de la corrida, avec un « décorum » à interroger (les costumes d’Agatha Ruiz de la Prada), et confie au compositeur Philippe Fénelon la délicate mission de créer une musique qui vagabonde entre l’univers traditionnel du pasodoble et l’écho contemporain d’une telle musique. Il y avait déjà la mort, la guerre, la fête, le rituel, tout cela en une seule danse, une seule musique. Maintenant, le pasodoble est aussi une matière imaginaire, corporelle et rythmique pour la création contemporaine.
