Antonio Tarantino est par sa formation turinoise versé dans le graphisme et le design artistique. C’est un peintre libéral habitué des installations et des expositions à Turin comme à Rome, qui finalement entame une carrière d’écrivain, voilà quinze ans. Passion selon Saint-Jean est le deuxième volet d’une tétralogie de Tarantino intitulée Quattro atti profani. Une histoire de fous, en quelque sorte, puisqu’elle donne à voir les effets plus ou moins pervers de la Centottanta (loi 180), votée en Italie en 1978, qui permet de transformer les asiles de fous en hôpitaux psychiatriques. Sophie Loucachevsky porte à la scène le quotidien de deux pensionnaires de ces lieux maudits, à Brescia. L’un est patient, Moi-Lui, qui croit racheter ses fautes inexistantes en pensant être un Lui d’importance. L’autre revêt le titre d’infirmier, « un gros bonhomme expéditif, normalement croyant… » Le chemin de croix de ce duo en neuf stations n’a d’autre raison d’être que de faire valider la maladie mentale de Moi-Lui dans le cadre de la nouvelle loi. Tout l’art baroque et sobrement esthétisant de Loucachevsky à redécouvrir.
