En 1967 paraissait sur le mythique label Prestige « El Hombre », le tout premier album d’un guitariste de 23 ans originaire de Philadelphie : Pat Martino. Un demi-siècle plus tard, le guitariste rescapé – il a dû réapprendre totalement son jeu de guitare après une rupture d’anévrisme en 1980 – renoue avec la formule du trio avec orgue qu’il a tant pratiquée dans sa jeunesse, au cœur du son soul jazz, avec des organistes comme Charles Earland, Jack McDuff ou Don Patterson. Celui qui l’accompagne au Hammond désormais s’appelle Pat Bianchi, que l’altiste Lou Donaldson (qui en connaît un rayon en la matière) a aussi choisi pour son groupe. Marqué par l’influence de Wes Montgomery, rival de Grant Green, Pat Martino combine sens du groove, attaque incisive, fluidité des phrases et culture be-bop. Un grand de la guitare, que l’on ne voit pas si souvent en France.
