Si le contrebassiste peut être légitimement considéré comme le pilier du jazz, Patrice Caratini peut aisément être envisagé comme l’un des fondamentaux pionniers de l’improvisation made in France. Depuis 1968, il a ainsi multiplié les champs d’investigation, de la chanson au tango, du grand orchestre au duo, du quasi classique au tellurique, aux côtés de légende ou avec des novices, comme autant d’expérimentations sonores. Impossible de circonscrire l’esthétique de celui qui s’est vu salué de nombreux prix, récompensant aussi bien ses qualités d’arrangeur que de compositeur, de leader que d’instrumentiste. Néanmoins, cette multiplicité ne doit pas masquer la singularité de son approche d’une musique, le jazz, qu’il a toujours entendue comme la possibilité de la dépasser. C’est de cette oreille qu’il faut aborder ce nouveau groupe à la belle instrumentation (cor, clarinette, accordéon, guitare, trombone et contrebasse, bien entendu), où le jeu du jazz demeure au centre des enjeux, qui nous font aller de l’Amérique du Sud à la musique française….
