Le prolixe duo de metteurs en scène formé par Patrice Caurier et Moshe Leiser ne connaît aucune limite en termes de répertoire. Si les deux complices ont déjà un Pelléas et Mélisande à leur actif, pour le Grand-Théâtre de Genève, c’est la version pour piano du drame lyrique de Debussy qu’ils règlent pour le Centre des bords de Marne, dans une coproduction réalisée avec le soutien de la Fondation Royaumont, partenaire privilégié des explorations hors des sentiers battus. La pièce de Maeterlinck avait fasciné le compositeur français dès sa découverte en 1893. Il avait alors écrit une mouture pour piano, avant de faire intervenir l’orchestration – et les interludes demandés par Albert Carré, le directeur de l’Opéra Comique, pour accompagner les changements de scénographie. C’est cet avatar princeps, au plus près de la déclamation, rarement à l’affiche, qu’un plateau de jeunes solistes défendra, au côté du piano de Martin Surot, dans un spectacle économe destiné à tourner. Preuve que l’opéra peut aussi être un genre intime, sans besoin de moyens pléthoriques.
