Pouvez-vous nous présenter le Concerto pour deux flûtes d’Emil Tabakov, un compositeur très peu joué en France…
Patrick Gallois : Je connais le compositeur et chef d’orchestre Emil Tabakov depuis une trentaine d’années. J’ai beaucoup joué sous sa direction, notamment le Concerto pour flûte de Marcel Landowski. Une fois, j’ai entendu l’un de ses concertos et je lui ai demandé s’il ne voulait pas en écrire un pour flûte. Comme je donnais à ce moment-là un concert avec une jeune flûtiste bulgare très douée, il a écrit un concerto pour deux flûtes ! C’est une pièce composée dans le style slave, assez proche de Khatchatourian. Le premier mouvement joue sur un effet d’écho entre les deux flûtes et le finale est, quant à lui, très dansant.
Quel rapport entretenez-vous plus globalement avec la musique contemporaine ?
P.G. : Je ne suis pas sectaire. Je joue aussi bien le concerto de Kagel, des pages de Nicolas Bacri que l’œuvre de Tabakov. Je pense néanmoins que, pendant un certain temps, la musique contemporaine a eu tendance à trop se détacher du public. Ce dernier souhaite entendre une musique agréable et belle, ne l’oublions pas.
Vous êtes également chef d’orchestre. Comment conciliez-vous vos deux activités ?
P.G. : C’est une continuité. J’ai souvent remarqué que dans un concerto, il y a une grande liberté du soliste alors que dans la symphonie, tout est très carré. J’essaie, notamment avec mon orchestre en Finlande, de retrouver cette souplesse dans les œuvres symphoniques. Il y a beaucoup de chefs, par exemple dans l’école finlandaise, qui sont très dirigistes. Je privilégie pour ma part l’imaginaire et je préfère toujours quelque chose qui ne soit pas parfait mais vivant.
